Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love, but even more so, to me this day represents passion in all its forms!
Personally, I have many passions: fashion, travel, cooking, renovating, decorating, and let’s just say that those last two are front and centre these days.
My wife and I are in the middle of renovating and are already starting to turn our attention to décor. All of this is happening at a crazy pace, because we’re filming an episode on this project that has to be delivered in the coming months. It’s hard to believe that it’s all going to come together, but the good news is that four months from now, we’ll have a home that’s completely redone—without this deadline, this project would have probably dragged out over three or four years!
I’m sure you’ve all heard the statistics about how the stress of a major renovation can push a relationship to the brink? It’s true that it takes a tight-knit couple to survive it, but above all, I believe you need to talk to each other, discuss from the outset each of your tastes and find a way to marry your ideas. It’s important to choose a direction from the start by taking into consideration the style of the home, condo or chalet to be renovated or decorated. Personally, I could just as easily live up north in a log cabin as I could in an uber-modern condo downtown. The key is to ensure—by making a plan before you start—that there is continuity among the elements and that everything gels together well.
If you’re lucky like me, your tastes will be compatible with those of your significant other, and you’ll manage to do everything harmoniously. Many find it easier to let their wife make all the decisions, but I need to stick my nose in everything! We’re on our third renovation as a couple, and aside from a few momentary rises of tension, the experience has been completely elating. After all, it’s an act of devotion to embark on a common project—it should stay fun and bring you together!
One thing that is of practically primordial importance is to have a very detailed budget so you can track it as closely as possible, because the “while we’re at it” factor is said to bump up the bill by about 30%.
Speaking of finances, first and foremost, do not forget to include room in your annual budget for a dozen red roses for your loved one on Valentine’s!
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!
